Last updated: February 02, 2002 Auto Italia Festival at Brooklands - June 1998
In June 1998 the UK magazine Auto Italia organised its second Italian Festival at Brooklands in Surrey. In case you don't know, Brooklands was Britain's first motor racing circuit (on the mainland, at least) and was famed for its banked oval circuit where, in the 1920's and 30's Bentleys, Alfas and any number of one-off specials circulated at speeds up to 143MPH !! The circuit was destroyed during the second world war to make way for an aircraft factory and runway and has since been sold off for industrial development. Part of the banking remains and the Brooklands Society has preserved a number of the original buildings as part of an increasingly fascinating museum project. Early morning - my Khamsin waiting beside a 450S and Ferrari 250GTO Maserati was this year's featured marque and the UK Maserati Club and a number of owners provided a truly mouthwatering range of cars. A small circuit was set out on part of the unused runway (using tyres as in days of old) and visitors were enthralled as Italian race and road cars, old and new, were driven by enthusiastic owners and guests. I was lucky enought to be invited to drive my Khamsin and enjoyed myself so much I was still reliving the experience weeks later. Let the photos speak for themselves .... The Maserati Eldorado from the Panini Collection Alfa Nardi The Track Roger Lucas (past Chairman of the Maserati Club) Steve Hart in Hartmut Ibing's Tipo 61 'Birdcage' No, not Nuvolari but Ed McDonough in the Alfa Nardi Alex Fyshe (Maserati Club President) imitating Toad in his OSCA MT4 Roger Lucas in a borrowed Alfa 8C Tony Merrick in Maserati 8CTF waiting for track time Cameron Millar - "Mr 250F" Cameron Millar (until recently the President of the Maserati Club) has owned and reestored many of the original 250Fs and is the man responsible for the small series of replica 250Fs using original components which he purchased from the factory in the 1960's. Just nine of these exquisite cars have been made (clearly identified by the serial numbers CM1 to CM9). Cameron retains the last car, CM9, which he drove at Brooklands providing me and many others present with great enjoyment - not to mention hope that I might also be able to drive as well in my advancing years!
The Concours A concours was held for Maserati with Prizes including the Trofeo Adolfo Orsi which was judged and presented by his grandson, also Adolfo. I polished the Khamsin after its exercise on track the preceding day but didn't win (now there's a surprise!). The ever genial Adolfo Orsi informed me that my badges are the wrong colour - my life will never be the same again ... Adolfo Orsi in judgement mode
The eminent judging panel The Trofeo Adolfo Orsi and the prize for best racer were both won by Dean Butler's superb Tipo 26M, presented at the event by Paul Myatt and Ken Hatton who look after the car. As you can see, Ken was quite pleased to win something ... !! John Whyte's superb Ghibli Spider Roger Lucas' Mistral Spider a worthy winner
Marios Kriticos (of Autoshield - the man who looks after my Maseratis) took the prize for best 1980's Maserati with his superb and original Karif. I didn't mind him winning the concours as my Khamsin (whose engine he had just rebuilt) proved comprehensively faster than the Karif on track! Anybody care to guess where my priorities lie? Should anybody be interested, the photos were taken with a Canon EOS-1nHS camera with 35-350USM lens. The negatives were scanned with a Nikon LS-2000 film scanner at 2700dpi and reduced for web reproduction.
