Coys Historic Festival 1996

The Maserati Club marquee

This event, which was in its fourth year took place over three days rather than the previous two. The weather was kind again (this is such a lucky event) which meant that the cars could be examined and watched in comfort.

For Maseratisti, this year's event provided a unique opportunity to see cars that you might otherwise only read about. The Maserati Club had its now customary marquee inside which were to be found the 8CTF chassis no. 3031 best known as the "Lucy O'Reilly Schell" car resplendent in its Belgian blue coachwork. Alongside was CM9 - Cameron Millar's last (so he told me) reproduction of the 250F. Whoever ends up with CM9 can take great enjoyment in a fabulous machine in which Cameron should take immense pride.

Outside stood the usual array of members' cars concentrating on the older (ie, non-Biturbo models). Pride of place was given to the sports cars with Ken Painter's 8CS alongside Anthony Hartley's Tipo 26 for the whole weekend.

Alex Fyshe (well known for his persuasive skills - his time spent at charm school proving a good investment) trawled the paddock in order to round up three Birdcages which drew large crowds, parked outside the marquee when not racing. Valentine Lindsay had loaned his Tipo 61 to Stirling Moss for the weekend. You will recall that it was Stirling who gave the Birdcage its first victory at Rouen les Essarts in 1959 - soon to be followed by a number of other victories. All who saw him reunited with one of his favourite cars will tell you that the maestro has not lost his touch. "Stirling's" car is no 38 in the picture above while no. 37 belongs to Tony Smith.

Edmund Pery was also sweet-talked by Alex into bringing his ultra rare Tipo 63 along. The interest this car produced was so great, Club members wished they had some printed info sheets explaining how the engine got inside the chassis!
