Maserati 200SI (click photo to enlarge) Photo shows the car racing at Westwood Racing Circuit in Canada in 1963. The car is thought to have come from the U.S. at that time.

Reply from Howard Jurgensen

I just talked with Pete Lovely and Steve Bayne to get the straight story on the acquisition of the 200S.  Tommy worked for both men over the years.

Tommy Meehan ( note corrected spelling of last name) is retired and living in a mountain cabin in the Cascades.

Pete said he was in Italy (1959) with Tom Carstons and Harry Eirely (not sure of spelling). Tom bought a 250 Farina coupe at Marinello and three Stangilleni Formula Jrs.

They then visited the Maserati factory and tested a 1500 OSCA but didn’t buy it.  They were then shown the 200S that was there on consignment.  Tommy had told Pete before they left that, if they ran across a Maserati, to buy it for him.

Pete bought the car and had it shipped to Tommy.  They never had any information as to who the previous owner was but thought it was two or three years old when they bought it in 1959

,  I just talked to Tommy Meehan to try and fill in the saga of the 200SI,  serial number 2915.

From Tommy’s recollection ( he is 78 ), he received the car in 1960 but didn’t run it until the spring of 1961 at the old airport track at Shelton Wa.  It apparently was set up running lean and he promptly burned holes in two pistons.

New pistons were ordered from Maserati and, when they came, they were just castings that had to be machined.  We were all racing on a shoestring in those days and Tommy wasn’t able to get the car ready to go until sometime in 1962.

He ran the car a few times at Kent ( then Pacific Raceway; now Seattle international Raceway ) and at least two times at Westwood during 1962 and 1963.

He took a third at Westwood in one event and lost it going into the Carousel and went straight over the high bank in the second outing.  I was a spectator at that time and remember seeing it happen.  The car pancaked down into the hole and landed flat.  I think the only damage was a bent wheel and some minor lower body damage.  The turn was later improved to be more forgiving to straying carrozziera.

Unfortunately, the car was outclassed by this time.  First by the Lotus 15’s and 19’s and the Porsche 904’s.

After the ‘63 season the car was sold to a Mr. Skidmore (for $2800.00) who campaigned the car in some ICNWSSC events.  It surfaced again several years later in the Road & Track classifieds for $16,000.00.  In circa 1980, it was last reported to be seen in top form racing at Monterey, California.
Any information to help identify the car and the driver. Any further history. Michael Gee
